Raps my favorite genre, but it's the weirdest genre too. The worst rappers get the most famous (Weezy, Drake, Mac Miller, etc), while the good and best rappers stay at the bottom or somewhere inbetween (Edo G, Masta Ace, Meek Miil, etc). The whole rap industry has at this point become a joke. It's mostly about how you market yourself. Some rappers make fun of this in their rap (Lil B). Lil B is arguably the smartest rapper alive because he has two styles, based, and real ****. Not gonna go into it but if you compare his tracks "Wonton Soup" to "Myspace" or "R.I.P. The Rap Game" you'll be able to tell which is which (he spits the realest **** in his real tracks and although some of them don't rhyme much at all it could be compared to poetry over a beat.

love rap/hip hop but ALL new music coming out right now isn't very good. not just rap. It's all about promoting your media companies image. Look at justin bieber. They hand him a sheet of paper with lyrics meant to appeal to 15 year old girls. and before him it was the jonas brothers. and after him it will be another kid promoting the same material with a slightly different sound and voice.

as gang starr said... mass appeal

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some is cool, I have heard really stupid rap about how cool/interesting the rappers are, but I have also heard really good rap about real things and daily problems with good messages. The same can be found in any genre there is good rap and there is bad rap just like there is good *insert genre* and bad *insert genre*.

I hate it when people say hip hop is dead because it has changed overtime. Not to discredit the artist in the past but the same things they talk about is not that much different from the topics of today. Especially referring to NWA. Hip hop was also just a nation thing back in the 90s and now its international which is awesome. I'm being able to experience hip hop in asian cultures, australia, and the UK.

But as many of you have said it is a joke. More and more artist are coming out with no

talent at all and they are bent on selling an image. Plus the fact that everybody thinks they

can become a rap artist just makes the game even more saturated and played out.

I'm still new to this genre as I only really started listening to it like 2 years ago. Also as

others said most of the really good music is not mainstream is all underground.

We had a huge argument with one of my friends. We were arguing whether such "artists " as lil wayne, etc. etc. are rappers or pop artists, me implying the latter.

After a lengthy argument we both decided to share with each other a selection of songs which, in our opinions, best represented the rap genre.

Most of his songs were catchy, boring and repetitive. Funnily enough, he said the same thing about my list.

Anyway, this is what I consider to be rap:

Black Star (Talib Kwali & Mos Def) - Respiration

Big Pun - Capital Punishment

Terror Squad & Big L - Bring em back

Terror Squad - Rude boy salute

Lowkey - Hand on your gun

Lowkey & Immortal Technique - Voices of the voiceless

Jurrassic 5 - Concrete Schoolyard

Outkast - Rosa Parks

Lupe Fiasco - Hip hop saved my life

K'naan - Kicked & Pushed

Q-tip & Korn - End of time

Ofc, there're a lot more songs/artists I listen to but this is the general style of music I like :)
