Jagex’s Faulty Logic

Tiger

Recommended Posts

Jagex, you have surprised me once again. I have been contemplating my return to RuneScape. But seeing this combat update beta to be accessible soon, I fear that you, as a company, have not fully understood ramifications that come with this update, which has been merely based on FAULTY LOGIC. You have used pures as a scapegoat to undertake this revolution in combat. But at what cost? You have further alienated a significant player base that has benefited and given RuneScape a new avenue to explore combat and the game as a whole. If this update goes as planned based under an illogical premise, then PvP will be reduced to nothing, ruining the formula that has made RuneScape so successful during its prime.

“Pures are not being outlawed in the new system, but it you have chosen not to train your defence, you will find yourself at a disadvantage in combat.” – Mod Rathe

"Fix the relationship between Defence, life points and damage outputs – Your ability to heal damage, through food or similar mechanics, should be comparable to how much damage you receive. That’s not quite true at the moment, and we’d like to address that.

Allow players’ combat levels to truly represent their ability – The combat level calculator is complicated and encourages players to not train certain skills in an attempt to create a false impression of their damage potential (pures)."

These quotes suggest that pures have caused the imbalance of the combat system. Pures are not the problem. The problem is the combat triangle. Not combat levels, THE COMBAT TRIANGLE. How can you say that we (the Pures) have ruined combat as a whole when the creators of RuneScape have allowed the ability for pures to exist through its current combat system? That is an illogical jump to an illogical conclusion. Instead of Jagex--Whom I’ll concede this point to--having made this unintended anomaly in its combat system taking credit for the SUCCESS that it has brought the combat, they decide to spread the implausible truth and point the finger at pures. You, as a company, have not even begun fully to address the matter of the combat triangle imbalance. Range is still underpower versus Melee; Magic is literally a sub-skill that is easily trumped versus either the two combat options. As a nearly maxed pure (I have 99 Strength, Range, and Mage, but only 83 Attack and 97 HP), I can provide testament to how undervalued Range, especially Magic, is to the current combat system. I rarely ever use Magic unless I’m drag pking for the lulz, going Elvemage style with full mystic and a Karil’s Crossbow. Elvemage was actually capable of utilizing the two weaker forms of combat, making him one of the greatest PKers of all time (Personally my favorite, that’s why I started my account!) But back on the subject, Melee has received constant buffs (Turmoil, Choatic Weapons), while Range and Magic are still lagging behind. Instead of fixing those glaring inequalities, Jagex unnecessarily shifts the focus on to Pures, which is ridiculous. To say that Pures have exploited a system that DELIBERATELY allowed such molding and shaping into a pure, is illogical. Pures have brought a new dimension to pking, as well as being replay value to RuneScape in the manner of new accounts being made, baby runes, rune pures, range/mage pures, melee/magic pures, etc. Jagex, you don’t seem to realize that you’ve inadvertently created a formula that has brought RuneScape its success. If you can’t properly connect the dots with why RuneScape’s combat system is broken, how can we trust you to properly fix it?

If this update were to be implement, PvM will fully dominate PvP. It was PvP that brought RuneScape its success, not PvM. For Jagex to turn its back on the recipe that made RuneScape relevant in discussing which are the best MMORPG’s has perverted RuneScape as a whole, and sadly, killing the most important aspect of RuneScape due to the success of PvP, originality. What other MMORPG can boast that it has clans that are 3, 4, even 7 YEARS OLD? Very few, but RuneScape is right up there with them, if not leading that call. How many memberships are renewed due to the success of those clans, the promising competition that battle has caused? More than PvM, I can tell you that. Clans are the main basis for the replay value, the endurance of its most dedicated players to RuneScape. But as soon as Jagex turned its back on the clan world, PvP has lost its flair, its touch, and left RuneScape nosediving into despair. The imbalance of the combat triangle has only exacerbated the problem. PvP through clans fosters longer lasting relationships that can keep players in the game. Do I even need to quote players from RSC, Pure Warfare, RSB, and other fan sites who will testify to this? Shifting from PvP to PvM has created a Recipe for Disaster. (See what I did there? =])

And yet Jagex, you still blame pures. And you see this combat update as a remedy to fixing PvP’s problems, making it fun and lucrative to all players once again. Maybe it is, but Jagex, with your track record in dealing with PvP, you show NO PROMISE IN FIXING ANY PROBLEM.

My solution? I offer none. But what I do ask is a referendum on the combat update. Let’s see what the player base is thinking, instead of catering to the childish “mains” who rant on the forums because they’ve been beaten by a pure.Work with your player base instead of dividing and scapegoating a part of it. Pures, in this current combat system, are adequately represented by their combat level, and have been for YEARS. So why change this now? Pures are not the cause of your dilemma Jagex; it is from your faulty logic alone.

I am merely an observer who has seen Jagex at its worst, and its best. Jagex, I thank you for creating RuneScape, I have no shame admitting that it has been a part of my life. I hope that I am able to include it once again in my life, in its proper role as something not to take seriously, to spend too much time, but to give me enjoyment whenever I need it. But if you are to transform combat, please scrutinize carefully what you have right now, instead of alienating a player base that was merely a product of what you created.

Took me about 40 mintues to write, what do you think? I'd like to post this on RS forums, but I wanted some feedback first.

EDIT: trying not to make it look like a big wall of text haha

Good argument, but is too much based on the fact of pures and not the combat system.

The system is flawed, but there are a lot of other ways to fix it than making def untouchable.

People we're complaining that you can get 1 hit with AGS, so they change the HP to vary hits, to 990 instead of 99. Then they release more overpowered weapons, these then can 2 hit people. So they have clearly decided to make Defence overpowered and harder to 2 hit people. Also it may to combat rushers?

Either way they have been there own Downfall and using PvP accounts as a scapegoat.

I agree. this whole update will make or break this game, and i know that for sure. Runescape cant go a single update without doing something wrong.

I honestly want this update to be positive, I want it to be successful. It has to be. But looking at the information that has been provided so far, and Jagex track record, this could be the greatest disappointment in RS history.

Jagex is going about this the wrong way from the very start.

Cba, training up my main to adapt to the new clan requirements.

we can only hope that jagex doesnt **** up clanning in general, because personally i only play this game for the clanning aspect of it.

Hopefully they do **** the game over so that all of us can quit RS and move on with our lives

What's the problem? The combat system is definitely flawed.

You didn't read the post closely enough then.

I agree that they shouldn't really be focusing on making pures bad. They haven't been that great the past few years. But this has been a long time coming.
