My theory is that ipbfree sold the databases. they claim "its not possible to retrieve anything" is just plain ********, obviously there is a way.

another theory is that they got sued. (and in the least likely scenario they got hacked and the hacker deleted everything including their backups spread over 10+ servers)

Exactly. They can recover information etc. They had to many DMCA violations which they ignored when they were warned about them and then were shut down due to not even attempting to fix them. People were hosting porn etc on their forums which caused the violations which led to the initial shut down.
