I remember when there was a top 3 consisting of MM, FOE, FI who used to go at each other in both servers, now there's only a top 2.

So were regular overheads and mithril, but look at the community now. Exactly, rune is not far from being "pure" the way this community is headed thus your argument that rune will not be accepted is irrelevant.

Back then they said 30 def will never be pure, look at the community now. Everyone is in addy and lots of clans are accepting 35 def.

Been there, done that, in the end MM is still on top. Not much you can do but beat them even if they all wear addy. The problem is MM is still winning even though they're all in addy thus promoting them to keep it. If only MM start losing would other clans have enough courage to drop the armor.
