I'm in the same boat as Nippon, really, not a huge fan of patriotism. The truth is that I believe it is rather pathetic if somebody boasts about his country's achievements, unless of course, that person has made a huge contribution to that specific accomplishment. Yet, to my own shame, I can't hide that I do have a certain degree of pride as a German and a Canadian. You can go anywhere in the world and be received positively once it is revealed you come from Canada. I remember when I was in a French restaurant with my family speaking English. The waiter whistled to himself as he passed us and didn't serve us for a good hour until one of us spoke up and told him we came from Canada. Directly after he exclaimed, "Oh, ils sont Canadiens!" and took our order.

I was extremely taken aback a few days ago when I heard about this Kony ordeal, it was a huge explosion of interest that seemingly came from nowhere. I don't doubt the conditions in Africa are horrible and I do support foreign aid (for multiple reasons, among those some are to our own benefit) and that Kony is a horrible man who would stop at no means to his desired end, but child abduction is the norm for Africans, it's what they do. Why pick Kony? A man with no power, no army, who is essentially of no threat to anybody anymore, when you could randomly pick any member of any active regime and the chances are about sure-fire that they've done the exact same evils. I'm sure what you've assessed from the facts may very well be spot-on. I wish people would stop giving in to the whim of sensationalist media.
